Misunderstanding over studio plan

The secretary of Radio Haldon, which will be South Devon’s independent radio station when it opens around the end of next year, has said that a planning application to use a Torquay hotel as a studio was withdrawn because of a “misunderstanding.”

The application, to use the Tregantle Hotel in Bampfylde Road for broadcasting, came before Torbay planning committee on Wednesday, when members were told that Radio Haldon’s architect had withdrawn the plan.

Later the secretary, Mr Hamish Turner, said he was annoyed about this happening.

Now, though, he has admitted that it was a misunderstanding between the architect and Radio Haldon.

“It was intended to go through with the application to establish a principle but we have now found something more suitable. The requirements from the IBA are a little less onerous for the Torbay end of the operation than we had thought.

“Although there have been delays at Torbay we are optimistic that both ends of the station — at Exeter and Torbay — can open at the same time.”
