Franchise losing station gains fans.

Soon to be silenced, DevonAir is the only Westcountry radio station to have increased its weekly share of listeners, according to the latest figures.

The commercial radio station lost its franchise in November after 13 years of broadcasting and will be replaced by Westcountry-based Gemini Radio at the end of 1994.

Figures for the last three months of 1993, just released by RAJAR (Radio Joint Research Limited), show DevonAir has increased its market share to 172,000 people — 37% of its target population — compared to 33% in the previous quarter. In fact, it beat BBC Radio 1, which had a weekly reach in Devon of 36%.

Plymouth Sound dropped to 36% from 39%, reaching 116,000 people, while BBC Radio Devon had 233,000 listeners, representing 27% of its target population.
