Speculation over radio pull-out

The fight for the independent local radio franchise for Torbay and Exeter area may now be between two applicants following a rumour that Bay City Radio had been dropped by the Independent Broadcasting Authority.

The IBA in London refused to discuss the situation. “We cannot confirm this,” they said. “You are free to speculate. We do not announce a shortlist.”

The IBA was in Torquay last week to see the three applicants, Bay City Radio, Radio Haldon and Riviera Radio. Further interviews are to take place in London early next month.

Mr Tony Boyce, a member of the Bay City Radio consortium, said there had been no formal communication with the IBA. “The whole matter is being considered in London,” he said.

“Our interest is only on the premise that the complex would be very near Torbay. The others are based near Exeter.”
